Which Windows to use? Which programs to use? PC security

Which PC or laptop to purchase?

PC, desktop, workstation:

It depends most on your needs. Higher price does not always mean better quality.

If you want ordinary home PC suitable for surfing the Internet, collecting e-mails, listening music, using office and watching movies, configuration of the AMD 3000+, 500-1000 MB ram, standard graphic card, hard disk of 100 GB and DVD burner is efficient.

If you need a PC to play games or 3D graphics and video processing, that requires stronger hardware. What exactly characteristics should be, it is hard to say until we know detailed description of your needs and financial capabilities.

Laptop:

The same as with desktop, choosing laptop depends on your needs and purpose, with difference that you can forget some serious gaming because laptops mostly have weak graphic cards. Serious video processing and 3D graphics are not possible unless you have a very powerful laptop that would cost minimum €2000

Next thing you need to considere is the quality of materials laptop is made of. Some laptops are made of materials that stronger pressure and handling would damage or deform.

Which Windowse to use?

This question seems simple, but in practice it isn't.

Although Vista is the latest version, it is the worst possible solution. Microsoft has continued its well-established tradition that each new version of Windows has more security holes than the previous one, heavier weight and more demanding hardware.

By Vista they really strike down all the records. To work normally, it is necessary to have quite strong hardware, for instance, minimaly 2 times stronger than for Windows XP, but you still won't get any better quality, or what so ever.

Moreover Vista is so bad and poor in quality that you get downgrade license with it. Downgrade license allows you to install Windows XP instead of installing Windows Vista. Read more about it in the article Certified For Windows Vista.

If, however, you go for Vista, be ready that your PC may be slower, which depends on hardware you have, your room program may not work and it is possible that some drivers you won't find.

My recommendation would be Windovs XP. If you have two PCs, on one of them you could install Linux (Debian, Ubuntu, openSUSE) or Unix (PC-BSD) that are completely free and much more stable and more secure than Windows.

Which programs to use?

Types of applications under license

Programs could be divided into open source or open code, freeware or free classical and commercial applications.
Open source programs are written by cool people who gave their codes in public for free study, use and editing.
Freeware programs are free, but if they are not open source you do not have insight into the code and you must not change it.

An example of open source software is OpenOffice. This is a set of office applications:
Writer-writing and word processing, printing and extraction in pdf
Math-scripting simple and complicated mathematical formulas
Impress-slide projection
Draw-drawing
Calc-simple and complex calculations of different formulas that are used in various types of operations and much more
Base-database like Access

So when you download OpenOffice, you may use it free of charge and scrutinize or modify the code. His opposite is Microsoft Office, which is a closed code and in Croatia, in 2008. will be charged approximately €337. Imagine that you're a small company with about 10 PC's. On each of them you can fully install free OpenOffice and use it just as good and even better than Microsoft Office. You can open documents created in Microsoft Office and record them in native format, or you can buy Microsoft Office 10 licenses that will cost you about €3370. What is better and more intelligent?

The example of freeware program is μTorrent. You may use it free of charge but you won't have insight into the code and you are not allowed to change it.

What are the importances of Open Source software?

Apart from those you see at first sight, that they are 100% free, there are several more reasons.
The same programs exist for multiple platforms. No matter if you use Unix, Linux, MacOS, or Windows, there are versions of OpenOffice or some other program for all of them.
Next advantage is that many developers worldwide are testing, discovering holes and errors and fixing them in no time. For example, Internet Explorer browser Microsoftow has emerged in about 1996. but up to this very day it is full of holes and omissions, opposed to Firefox which right from the start had just a few slight failures and those were quickly fixed.
Furthermore, there is an insight into the code and no one can put it into the program or operating system (which would secretly give the manufacturer details about you, computer, programs you use, etc.) That you might not understand the programming language is not important at all because there are thousands of people who does and they would place such alert in the Internet, if they would found such code in the program.
Next advantage is that for each of these programs or operating systems exist a lot of forums, or e-mail lists where you can always post a question about use or work of the program or operating system.

PC security

Although you have antivirus, anti spyware, etc. the fact is that you are never 100% sure that you cannot get infected.

I have another suggestion. If You have 2 PC's, one of them install Linux (Debian, Ubuntu, openSUSE) or Unix (PC-BSD) that are completely free and much more stable and more secure than Windows.
Unlike Windows, they're rationally exploiting the hardware so that the old PC too function very well with Linux/Unix system.
For them, there are also programs for processing 2 and 3 D graphics, DTP, web pages etc. The best thing is that those programs are free of charge in 99% of cases.

Turn off Windows PC from the Internet and turn on Linux/Unix.
That way spare yourself of pain and problems :-)
